REGENERATING BIODIVERSITY

Cultivating the return of native species

Biodiversity is essential for sustainable development and the survival of the human species. It provides necessary natural resources such as food, medicines and raw materials, and maintains the balance of ecosystems. The loss of biodiversity can compromise the health of the planet and, therefore, the quality of life of present and future generations. Protecting biodiversity is essential to ensure a sustainable and resilient future.

WILDLIFE REFUGES .

On September 6, the civil association Vida Silvestre Uruguay on the one hand and Ben Petrazzini / Daniela Alfaro for Las Nativas, signed an agreement for cooperation and integration into the Wildlife Refuges program!!! The Agreement establishes commitments and obligations for both parties (see).

From that moment on, Las Nativas became a member of the Wildlife Refuge Network of Uruguay, a very valuable initiative that is progressively incorporating actors and principles of regeneration and sustainability into the productive programs of the different land owners. To learn more about this important initiative, visit the Network's website.

The Network has an annual meeting to be held at one of the sites in order to exchange challenges, experiences, and knowledge. The next one will be held on November 2, 2024 in Sierra de los caracoles Maldonado.

MIYAWAKI FOREST.

Miyawaki Forests, 10x Faster Growth, 30x Denser The Miyawaki Reforestation Method is named after its creator, Akira Miyawaki, a Japanese botanist and plant ecologist with a particular interest in native plant species interacting with each other within communities. This tree planting method is one of the most effective for rapidly creating forest cover on degraded land that has been used for other purposes, such as agriculture or construction.

It is effective because it is based on the principles of natural reforestation, that is, using native trees from the area and replicating the natural regeneration processes of forests. The same occurs when a clearing opens in the upper stratum of the forest due to the fall of a larger tree. Young trees grow very quickly to compete for light and then natural selection will favour the fastest growing individuals.

At Las Nativas we have started a first stage with native plants and we hope to repeat the experience in the coming months. On this first occasion, about 200 plants were planted, including Taruman, Coronilla, Tala, Palo de Fierro, Guaviyu, Angico, Chal Chal, Pitanga, Ubajay, Guayabo Colorado...

Greater biodiversity has been recorded in Miyawaki forests than in neighbouring forests, making it an ideal method for creating diverse forest ecosystems quickly. Trees planted using this method grow much faster, kick-start the forest-building process and capture more carbon.

VIRALIZING NATIVES .

With the guidance of Oscar Blumetto and other biologists who are experts in plants, we are implementing a program to transplant native plants in areas with an overabundance of plants, where grazing and agricultural work have impoverished the soil. The technique consists of removing the plant with a clod and transplanting it into a pot. For six months we take care of the plants so that they take root and sprout, and then, in the fall, we move them and replant them in the place where we hope a new forest will form.
